What is Sustainable Energy Technology?

The Sustainable Energy Technician programs will prepare graduates for technician jobs in the rapidly expanding sustainable energy industry. Program graduates have general skills in industrial safety, electrical and electronic troubleshooting, hydraulic and pneumatic system operation, 3 phase power systems, power distribution, HVACR systems, network communications and cabling, and mechanical system repair. They also have specialized skills in programmable logic controls, digital electronics, single and 3 phase motor control, solar photovoltaic and hydronic systems, wind turbine operations and maintenance, and building automation. Graduates of the program are technicians skilled in installation, maintenance, and operation of sustainable and conventional energy systems.

TYPE OF COLLEGE DEGREES

Associate of Applied Science degree (two-year) Intended to lead to employment

Certificate of Applied Science (one-year) Intended for exposure to the topic and an exit point for those unable to complete the entire program

SKILLS, TRAITS, PREPARATORY CLASSES THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL
  • Ability to work at heights of up to 100 meters
  • Ability to work in confined spaced
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds unassisted
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Upon completion students will:

  • Demonstrate industry safety skills including; climbing, rescue and confined space procedures
  • Demonstrate an understanding of programmable logic controllers and motor control systems
  • Understand the basics of energy production, delivery, consumption, and conservation
  • Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot electrical circuits and digital circuits
  • Demonstrate the ability to install and troubleshoot a wind and solar energy systems
  • Demonstrate the ability to install and troubleshoot a basic network communication system
  • Demonstrate the ability to install operate and troubleshoot a building automation system
