The Surgical Technology program is a Great Falls College MSU degree. Billings is an off-campus site where students can earn their Surgical Technology degree by taking prerequisite courses through City College.  Lecture classes will be taught through WebEx from the Great Falls campus and students must attend classes at one of the designated class rooms to participate.  Lab classes will be taught by an instructor at your location in a designated lab space.  Clinical and Internship spots will be assigned to you by your lab instructor and may require you to travel out of your designated area to fulfill your minimal requirement of 120 surgical cases.

NEW Sprint option:  Starting Summer 2023, Great Falls is piloting an excelerated option for the surgical tech program (only via the Billings site).  The pre-requisite courses are the same as the traditional program and can be completed from any accredited college.  Students choosing this path would still submit an application to the Great Falls College surgical tech program by October and must have all pre-requisites completed by the end of fall term.  Students accepted into the Sprint Surgical tech program would start their core classes in the Spring term, alongside the traditional path students.  Where this program deviates from the traditional program - is that students would go year-round and would take their 2nd semester of surgical tech classes in the summer and their final semester in the fall term.  This would have them completing their degree 4 months earlier than those in the traditional program.

Academic Structure

The A.A.S. in Surgical Technology is a shared Sprint program with MSU Billings City College campus and Great Falls College MSU. Students will take their prerequisite coursework with City College and the Surgical Technology program through Great Falls College.  While Great Falls College will provide the curriculum and program accreditation, all students will be in Billings. The program will be 5 continuous semesters in length.  The program is fully accredited and provides students with the same opportunity for licensure upon completion.

Scholarship Structure

Surgical Technology students are eligible for sizeable scholarship amounts via the Sprint Degree program, up to $12,000/student/program.  Students are eligible for these dollars when they are placed into the Surgical Technology Sprint cohort.  If a student chooses to exit the sprint program, they are not required to payback Sprint Degree scholarships, but the funds are not available for transferring to a different program.

Industry Commitment

Surgical Technology is being supported through industry partnerships; St. Vincent/SCL Health and Billings Clinic.  Students in this cohort/program will be matched with an industry partner.  As part of this partnership, students will be eligible for paid employment during the program and will be eligible for full time employment upon successful completion of the program.

Financial Structure

Sprint Degree students are eligible for Sprint Degree scholarships; however, they are also eligible for other financial aid.  Students are highly encouraged to complete the FAFSA (not required) and may be packaged up to full Cost of Attendance (tuition, fees, books, room, board)

Onboarding Structure

Students will apply to City College as a general education student.  Once a completed application has been received and reviewed, City College staff will connect with students to provide program details, industry requirements, and connect them with Sprint Degree coaching/advising staff.  Students should understand:

  • How the program is shared between each campus
  • The importance of completing the FAFSA
  • Academic plan for the Sprint Degree option
  • Financial aid opportunities for Sprint Degrees
  • Understand the industry partnership portion of the degree
